Pros & Cons of Matte Lip Color

← Back to Blog

As artists, we always carry a variety of lip products: lip gloss, lipstick, and liquid matte lip color, each applied with its own technique. All three have pros and cons — here I want to focus on matte, or liquid lipstick.

The pros

The pigment payoff on bright colors is unbeatable, nothing lasts longer, the formula gives beautifully precise lip lines, and — very important for a wedding day — it doesn't transfer.

The cons

The texture can feel quite dry, and I've found this is even more noticeable in hot, humid, tropical weather. It also doesn't hold as well on very moist areas, so it can fade from the center of the lips as the day goes on. And since the formula breaks down with oil, anything greasy that touches your lips will take the color with it.

My advice: if keeping up with lip color stresses you out, we'll find you an easier solution. But if a flawless matte lip is worth the effort, start wearing it every day now so you get used to the feeling, and bring your favorite color or brand to your appointment. And if you're the bride — practice kissing your partner beforehand, it helps more than you'd think!
